Meroë is an archaeological complex in northern Sudan that served as a royal city and cemetery for the ancient Kingdom of Kush. It is especially noted for its large cluster of steep-sided pyramids used as royal tombs.
Visitors can see extensive pyramid cemeteries and the remains of temples and settlement structures associated with the Meroitic state. The pyramids and associated burial complexes are the most visible and studied features of the site.
Meroë rose to prominence as a centre of the Kushite kingdom after the Napatan period and remained important through the Meroitic era, when distinctive pyramid construction and urban development characterized the site. Archaeological investigation has documented funerary architecture, temples and remains of the urban centre.
The site lies on the east bank of the Nile in Sudan’s River Nile state, roughly northeast of Khartoum, set on a dry savanna plain near the Nile’s course and accessible from regional towns.
