Meoto Iwa
Area Paired sacred rocks linked by shimenawa near shore
Meoto Iwa, the “wedded rocks” off Futami in Mie Prefecture, are two coastal rocks joined by a shimenawa rope at a Shinto shrine. Pilgrims and photographers come for the ritual setting and sunrise views.
Meoto Iwa, the “married rocks,” are a pair of sacred sea stacks off the coast of Futami in Mie Prefecture, Japan, linked by a heavy shimenawa rope and associated with Shinto worship.
The two rocks are a compact coastal shrine feature that visitors view from the shore near the Futami Okitama Shrine; the shimenawa is periodically replaced in a public ritual. Many visitors come for shoreline photos and sunrise views when the rocks form a distinctive coastal silhouette.
The rocks are venerated in Shinto tradition as a representation of husband-and-wife kami (deities) and have been a local religious landmark for centuries; the associated shrine administers customary rituals and maintenance of the rope.
Meoto Iwa is located on the Pacific coast at Futami, part of the Ise area in Mie Prefecture, easily reached from the nearby town and shrine precinct.
- Religious meaning: The two offshore rocks are joined by a heavy shimenawa rope and are associated with the nearby Futami Okitama Shinto shrine; they symbolise a married couple in Shinto belief.
- Best time to visit: Sunrise views across the sea make the site a popular time to view the rocks, especially in clear weather.
What to See #
- The paired rocks: A larger rock symbolizing the husband deity and a smaller rock representing the wife deity stand linked offshore by a thick shimenawa rope that is ceremonially replaced several times a year.

Tips for Visiting Meoto Iwa #
- Aim for sunrise or early morning at Futami Okitama Shrine (Meoto Iwa) to catch the rocks with softer light and to avoid the mid‑day crowds that come from nearby Ise.
- Use Futamiura Station (JR/Kintetsu) and walk the short route from the station instead of arriving by car - the pedestrian approach puts you on the coastal path with the best vantage points.
- Check tide times before you go: low tide gives clearer access to the shoreline and better photo angles of the shimenawa rope; also look for the small shrine buildings and coastal viewpoints that many visitors skip.
