Memorial sites of the Genocide: Nyamata, Murambi, Gisozi and Bisesero

The Memorial sites of the Genocide - Nyamata, Murambi, Gisozi and Bisesero - are a group of Rwandan memorials established to remember and commemorate the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Each site preserves material evidence, burials and exhibits that document the events and their aftermath.

The memorials combine preserved architecture and burial grounds with exhibition spaces that display documentation, personal effects and oral histories. Sites vary in form from churches and schools where killings occurred to larger kilometre-scale cemeteries and hilltop memorials, each presenting different aspects of the national tragedy and processes of memory and justice.

All four sites relate directly to events of 1994 when mass killings occurred across Rwanda. In the years after the genocide these locations were identified, preserved and developed into memorials and educational centres by the Rwandan government and local communities to honour victims and support reconciliation and learning.

The four memorials are distributed across Rwanda: Gisozi is located in the capital Kigali, Nyamata lies in the Bugesera area to the south of Kigali, Murambi is in the southern part of the country near the former Gikongoro region, and Bisesero is located in the western highland area. Each site is accessible by road and is integrated into national remembrance itineraries.
