About Memento Park

Memento Park is an open-air museum on the outskirts of Budapest that houses a collection of monuments and statues from Hungary’s Communist period. The park presents these works as historical objects rather than in their original propagandistic settings.

Large public sculptures and reliefs from the 1949-1989 period are arranged across landscaped grounds, and an indoor exhibition explains the political and cultural background of the period. The park offers both close inspection of the artworks and curated interpretation for visitors.

After the fall of the Communist government in 1989 many public monuments were removed from city locations; the park was created in the early 1990s to collect and display these pieces in one place. It has since become a focal point for reflection on the Communist era in Hungary.

How to Get to Memento Park

Memento Park is on the southwestern outskirts of Budapest. From central Budapest take Metro line M2 to Kelenföld (Kelenföld vasútállomás) and transfer to a local bus or suburban service toward Budaörs/Memento Park, or drive southwest out of the city on the main arterial roads; the park is reached in under an hour by public transport and is a short walk from the bus stop.

If arriving by car follow the main routes out of Budapest toward Budaörs/M1-M7 corridors and follow signs for Memento Park/park entrances.

Tips for Visiting Memento Park

  • Visit on a weekday morning to avoid weekend groups; the park is compact so early arrival gives the best light for photos and quieter time to read plaques.
  • Take public transit from central Budapest (Déli pályaudvar is the nearest major rail hub) or a short taxi ride rather than driving on match days-parking can be limited.
  • Don't rush past the indoor exhibition and audio guide: they provide historical context that makes the outdoor statues far more meaningful and are often overlooked by casual visitors.
