Why Visit Meizhou? #

Rooted in Hakka heritage, Meizhou draws travelers interested in distinct regional culture, ancestral architecture and hearty cuisine. The Meixian district’s old streets and the Hakka Museum offer a clear view of clan life, while traditional crafts and ancestral halls keep histories visible. Food is a highlight-try lei cha (thunder tea rice) and salt-baked chicken at family-run teahouses and markets. Traditional Hakka hill songs and lively clan festivals add music and ritual, making it a rewarding counterpoint to Guangdong’s coastal cities.

Who's Meizhou For?

Couples

Meizhou’s low-key Hakka towns-Meixian and Meijiang-make for relaxed romantic weekends. Stay in a family-run guesthouse, sip local tea by the Meijiang River and share salt-baked chicken at a small riverside restaurant; quiet evenings and very few tourists.

Families

Meizhou is safe and family-friendly, with small parks, hands-on Hakka cultural exhibits and easy-paced river walks that children enjoy. There aren’t big amusement parks, but inexpensive guesthouses and family restaurants in Meixian make multigenerational trips relaxing.

Backpackers

Budget travelers will find cheap Hakka meals and low-cost buses, but there’s a thin hostel scene and limited English. Smaller guesthouses in Meixian and Meijiang are affordable; expect to rely on local buses and trains to reach rural villages.

Digital Nomads

Meizhou has decent mobile internet in town but few dedicated coworking spaces and spotty English support. China’s firewall and visa rules complicate long stays; cost of living is low, yet remote-work conveniences for foreigners are limited.

Foodies

If you love Hakka cuisine, Meizhou is a treat: salt-baked chicken, stuffed tofu and home-style slow-cooked flavors dominate. Visit morning markets, family restaurants in Meixian and local tea houses for authentic, inexpensive dishes rooted in local tradition.

Adventure Seekers

Outdoor options are modest but satisfying: hill-and-river hiking, cycling between Hakka villages, and river-valley walks around Meijiang. There are day-trip possibilities to nearby forested hills, but commercial extreme-sport operators are virtually nonexistent.

Party Animals

Meizhou isn’t a party hub - nightlife is limited to a handful of small bars, KTV rooms and low-key pubs in Meijiang and Meixian. Expect early closing times and few live-music venues; for big clubs you’ll need to go to Guangzhou.

Nature Buffs

Rivers, tea terraces and forested hills reward slower travel: birdwatching, quiet village walks and riverside photography are excellent. The countryside around Wuhua and Meixian has good rural trails, small waterfalls and photogenic Hakka architecture.

How to Get to Meizhou

Meizhou is reachable by small regional flights into Meizhou Meixian Airport (MXZ) and by rail and coach links from larger Guangdong hubs. High-speed trains to Meizhou West and long-distance buses from Guangzhou and Shenzhen are the common overland options for most visitors.

By Air

Meizhou Meixian Airport (MXZ): The city’s own airport is Meizhou Meixian Airport (MXZ). From MXZ there is an airport shuttle/minibus into Meizhou/Meixian town that typically costs about CNY 15-25 and takes around 40-60 minutes depending on exact stop; a taxi into central Meizhou generally takes about 30-45 minutes and typically costs about CNY 80-120.

(If you fly into a major hub): If you arrive at Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) or Shenzhen Bao’an (SZX) you’ll usually continue to Meizhou by high-speed train or long-distance coach (see Train & Bus card) - these are common onward options when there are no direct flights to MXZ.

By Train & Bus

Train: Meizhou is served by high-speed services to Meizhou West (梅州西站) and by older conventional services to Meizhou/Meizhou Station. High-speed (G/D) trains from Guangzhou or Shenzhen to Meizhou West typically take on the order of 2.5-3.5 hours and second-class fares are commonly in the CNY 100-180 range; slower conventional trains take longer and are cheaper. Use China Railway 12306 or major booking apps to check schedules and buy tickets.

Bus: Long-distance coaches run between Meizhou and regional hubs (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chaoshan). Typical coach journeys from Guangzhou take about 4-5 hours and fares commonly range CNY 60-120 depending on service and seat class; from Shenzhen times are similar or a bit shorter. Coaches arrive at the city’s main long‑distance bus stations - check the departure/arrival station when booking.

How to Get Around Meizhou

For most visitors the easiest way to move around Meizhou is a mix of taxis/Didi for flexibility and local buses for cheap travel. Use high-speed rail to arrive from major Guangdong hubs and then switch to a taxi or bus for the last leg into central Meizhou.

Where to Eat in Meizhou #

Meizhou is the heartland of Hakka food, where homestyle cooking is the point. The cuisine skews simple and hearty - salt-baked chicken (客家盐焗鸡) is king, abacus beads (算盘子) are comfort food, and stuffed or braised tofu appears on almost every menu. Wander Meixian Old Street and the market lanes for the most memorable, no-frills versions; those small stalls and hotel restaurants serve dishes the locals grew up on.

If you’re curious, visit the Meizhou Hakka Museum area for context and a quiet teahouse break, then let your nose lead you to riverfront stalls and neighborhood markets. Even though big chains are available for international cravings, the real reason to come is the Hakka home cooking: slow flavors, preserved techniques, and a focus on texture as much as spice.

Living in Meizhou #

Meizhou (Guangdong) is a mid-size prefecture city and an important center of Hakka culture. Long-term foreign residents most commonly enter China on a work (Z) visa which must be converted to a residence permit after arrival; students use X visas and family reunion visas are Q (Q1/Q2) depending on duration. Permanent residency (D) is rare and requires specific qualifications.

Cost of living is low compared with Guangzhou/Shenzhen: expect one-bedroom apartments in the city center roughly ¥1,500-3,000/month and basic utilities around ¥200-400/month. Healthcare is provided by municipal hospitals (Meizhou People’s Hospital, Meizhou Hospital of TCM); many expats keep international medical insurance and travel to Guangzhou/Shenzhen for specialized treatment. Accommodation options include local rentals, national budget hotel chains (Jinjiang Inn, GreenTree), and newer apartments near the airport or commercial corridors.

Best Neighborhoods
Meizhou is centered on Meixian District; neighborhoods are practical and affordable, with most expat-friendly services concentrated in the urban core. Expect quieter, more rural options outside the city for lower rents.
  • Meixian (梅县区) - City center, Hakka culture, most services nearby
  • Jiaoling / Rural outskirts - Cheaper housing, quieter, longer commutes
  • Near Meizhou Meixian Airport - Handy for travel, newer developments, pricier
  • Dongshan / commercial corridor - Shops and markets, convenient transport links
Health & Wellness
Public hospitals provide solid primary and emergency care; specialist or expat-oriented private care is limited, so many residents travel to Guangzhou or Shenzhen for advanced treatment. International health insurance is recommended.
  • Meizhou People's Hospital (梅州市人民医院) - Largest general hospital, public, Mandarin care
  • Meizhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine - TCM treatments, acupuncture, local reputation
  • Meizhou Maternal & Child Health Hospital - Maternity and pediatric services, local referrals
  • Local private clinics - Basic care, higher fees, limited English
Cost of Living
Meizhou is considerably cheaper than Guangdong megacities; basic monthly living for a single person can be modest if renting locally. Budget for international insurance if you want private or cross-city specialist care.
  • Rent - 1BR city center ¥1,500-3,000/mo, outside ¥800-1,800
  • Utilities - Electricity/water/gas ¥200-400/mo typical
  • Food & groceries - Local meal ¥8-25, mid-range ¥40-80 per person
  • Transport - Bus ¥1-3, taxi start ~¥7-10, local trains affordable
  • Healthcare visits - Public clinic ¥50-200, private ¥200+ per visit

Digital Nomads in Meizhou

Meizhou is not a major digital nomad hub - the scene is small and largely local. Reliable mobile 4G/5G and fiber broadband are available in the urban core; typical residential plans offer around 100 Mbps, while mobile data speeds in the city commonly range from ~50-150 Mbps. Dedicated coworking offices are scarce, so nomads use libraries, hotel business centers, university reading rooms, and cafes.

Costs for a nomad are modest: café coffees ¥12-30, hotel business‑center day passes or meeting room rentals ¥50-200, and prepaid SIM/data starter packages typically cost around ¥100-200 depending on data. Bring or subscribe to an international VPN if you need unrestricted access and keep international health insurance while based here.

Coworking Spaces
Formal coworking options are limited in Meizhou; nomads typically use city library spaces, hotel business centers, university reading rooms, and cafés as ad-hoc workspaces.
  • Meizhou Library - Quiet study areas, reliable daytime Wi‑Fi
  • Hotel business centers (Jinjiang/GreenTree) - Pay-per-use desks, stable internet, central
  • Local cafes along main commercial streets - Casual work spots, variable Wi‑Fi, coffee ¥12-30
