The Meidum Pyramid is an Old Kingdom-era pyramid located near the village of Meidum in Egypt’s Faiyum/Al Fayyum region and is generally dated to the Fourth Dynasty.
The structure is distinctive because the original outer casing has largely collapsed, leaving a stepped core that illustrates an early stage in the development of true smooth-sided pyramids. The visible ruin is compact and striking on the surrounding plain, and the site includes remnants of associated funerary structures.
Construction of the pyramid is commonly attributed to Fourth Dynasty rulers; archaeological interpretation links its final form to activities during the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu, following an earlier phase. Over time the outer masonry failed or was removed, producing the present exposed stepped profile.
The pyramid stands near the village of Meidum in the Faiyum/Al Fayyum area of northern Egypt, set on the agricultural plains away from the Nile Valley cities.
