Meidum
Administrative Seat Ancient Egyptian pyramid site featuring early pyramid
Ancient pyramid complex in the Faiyum region featuring the Meidum Pyramid and surrounding mastaba tombs. Egyptology visitors study Old Kingdom architecture and the site’s visible collapse stages.
Meidum is the site of an early Egyptian royal pyramid complex in the Faiyum region, notable for a pyramid that preserves an inner stepped core and a collapsed outer casing. The pyramid dates to the late 3rd to early 4th Dynasty (around the early Bronze Age period of Egypt) and is important for the study of the development of pyramid architecture.
The site features the main pyramid alongside several mastaba tombs and funerary structures with high-quality reliefs and paintings. Visitors see the stark collapsed profile of the pyramid and adjacent tombs rather than a fully intact monumental complex.
The pyramid is traditionally associated with rulers of the transitional period between Huni and Sneferu; archaeologists interpret its construction as part of the move from step pyramids to true smooth-sided pyramids in the early Fourth Dynasty. Excavation and study in the 19th and 20th centuries highlighted the site’s role in early state funerary practices.
Meidum lies in the eastern part of the Faiyum Governorate on the edge of the Nile valley’s desert fringe, southwest of Cairo and within reach of the Fayum agricultural and lake district.
- Architectural significance: The pyramid is an important transitional monument in early pyramid construction, showing features of both step and smooth-sided designs dating to the late Third and early Fourth Dynasty.
- Notable finds: Relief fragments and paintings from nearby tombs, notably scenes attributed to Nefermaat, are significant finds now held in Egyptian collections and referenced in studies of Old Kingdom art.
What to See #
- Meidum Pyramid: The principal pyramid at the site - a multi-stage structure with an inner stepped core and an outer casing that largely collapsed leaving its characteristic tower-like appearance; the base measures roughly 144 metres on a side and the original height is reconstructed at around 125 metres.
- Mastabas and tombs: A group of early Old Kingdom mastaba tombs and subsidiary graves, including the famous funerary reliefs attributed to the mastaba of Nefermaat.
How to Get to Meidum #
The archaeological site of Meidum lies in the Faiyum region southwest of Cairo, roughly 70-90 km from central Cairo (about a 1.5-2 hour drive depending on traffic). By car drive from Cairo toward Faiyum (follow the Cairo-Faiyum road), then follow local signs to Meidum; there is parking near the site and a short walk from the parking area to the pyramid. Public transport options include minibuses or buses from Cairo to Faiyum town and then a local taxi to Meidum.
Tips for Visiting Meidum #
- Aim for early morning or late-afternoon light for photography and to avoid the heat; Meidum is much less crowded than Giza so those quieter hours make for an especially peaceful visit.
- Approach the site via the single visitor entrance and spend time close to the pyramid base-the collapsed outer casing and stepped core are visible and are the key features that tell Meidum's unusual structural story.
- Hire a local Egyptologist or licensed guide based in Faiyum to explain the pyramid's complex construction phases and to point out nearby mastabas and tombs that casual visitors often overlook.
