Mechrey Village

Mechrey Village is a rural, lakeside community located on the Tonle Sap floodplain in Cambodia, characterised by stilted and floating houses and livelihoods tied to seasonal fishing. The settlement forms part of the broader Tonle Sap ecological and human landscape.

The village presents vernacular stilt and floating architecture, local markets and community facilities adapted to annual fluctuations in water level. Visitors typically use small boats to move between houses and local pontoons and can observe local fishing methods and seasonal rice and fish production.

Mechrey has developed as a traditional fishing and farming community shaped by the Tonle Sap hydrological cycle; buildings and infrastructure are adapted to months of inundation followed by lower water levels. The village continues to support subsistence and market-orientated fishing activities.

The village lies within the Tonle Sap basin in north-western Cambodia, on the floodplain south-west of Siem Reap city and accessible by combined road and boat trips from the Siem Reap area.
