How to Get to Mebisa#
Mebisa in Chukha District is reached primarily by road after entering Bhutan via Paro or the southern border. Bhutan has no rail network, so expect mountain driving with hired drivers or buses for longer inter-district journeys.
Paro International Airport (PBH): Bhutan’s main international airport and the usual entry point for international travellers. From Paro to Chukha District (and onward toward Mebisa) travel is by road - routes cross mountain passes and can take several hours; vehicle hire with a driver is the standard option.
Bagdogra (IXB) / Guwahati (GAU) (India): Some visitors enter Bhutan via Indian airports and cross at Phuentsholing; from the border towns you continue by road into Chukha District. Road travel times depend on border formalities and onward distance to specific villages like Mebisa.
Train: Bhutan has no railway network. The nearest Indian railheads for southern border crossings are New Jalpaiguri (Siliguri) / Hasimara depending on route; onward travel into Bhutan is by road.
Bus: Within Bhutan and across the border, scheduled and private buses operate between district towns. In Chukha District, travel between towns and villages is mainly by road using buses, shared taxis and private vehicles; services vary and are less frequent than in large cities.
How to Get Around Mebisa#
Expect to travel to Mebisa by road from Paro or through the southern border; Bhutan’s transport is dominated by private hires, district buses and shared taxis. Prearranged transfers are recommended for reliability.
- Car with driver / Private transfer - Hiring a car with a driver is the normal way to travel between towns in Bhutan; drivers handle mountain roads and permit requirements. For remote villages like Mebisa arrange transfers through your hotel or a local tour operator.
- Domestic bus / Local bus - Buses and shared taxis operate between major towns and district centres, but frequency is limited and schedules can change. Buses are inexpensive but slower than private transfers; check with local offices for times.
- Taxi / Shared taxi - Shared taxis (often jeeps) are common for inter-town travel and are a flexible option when bus times don’t suit. They depart when full and can be quicker than buses for some routes.
- Walking / Local trails - For very local travel within villages and to nearby fields or trails, walking is standard. Mountain terrain can be steep - good footwear is recommended.
- Cycling (limited) - Cycling is possible on flatter stretches but is less common due to hilly terrain and limited road shoulders. E-bikes are rare; cycling is more of a niche option for fit travellers.
