A Red Sea coastal subregion centered on Massawa; visitors explore Ottoman‑era architecture, seafood markets and use the port as a gateway to the Dahlak Archipelago for diving.
Massawa Subregion is an administrative district in Eritrea’s Northern Red Sea region centred on the port city of Massawa. It serves as Eritrea’s principal Red Sea port and a longstanding maritime gateway for the region.
The subregion includes low-lying coastal plains, a deepwater harbour and shoreline built largely of coral-derived materials. The built environment in the main town features narrow streets and coastal architecture adapted to a hot, humid climate, and the coastal waters host coral reefs and fishing grounds.
The port and town have been important maritime hubs for centuries and have at times been administered by Ottoman, Egyptian and Italian authorities; the area became part of independent Eritrea in 1993. Over time the harbour and urban fabric have reflected those layered influences and the subregion’s role as a trading and fishing centre.
The subregion sits on Eritrea’s Red Sea coast, facing offshore islands and reefs, and lies roughly 65 km east of Asmara in a generally low-lying coastal landscape.
