Market Square, known locally as Rynok Square, is the central square of Lviv’s historic centre in western Ukraine. It forms the civic and commercial heart of the old town and is included in Lviv’s UNESCO World Heritage designation.

The square is enclosed by multi-storey historic townhouses and features the Town Hall at its centre; the surrounding buildings house museums, restaurants and shops. The Town Hall tower provides a public viewpoint over the square and the old town.

The square dates to the medieval period as the planned centre of the city’s original layout and has been the focal point for commerce and public life throughout Lviv’s history.

The square sits in the geographic centre of Lviv’s historic core and is easily reached on foot from other major landmarks in the city.

Lviv’s Market Square (Rynok Square) is in the heart of the historic centre, so it’s best reached on foot once you’re in central Lviv. From Lviv Railway Station the square is about 2 km away (roughly a 25-30 minute walk) or a short taxi/municipal-transport ride into the city centre. Many tram and trolleybus routes serve stops within a few minutes’ walk of the square.

• Climb the Ratusha (Town Hall) tower early in the morning for unobstructed panoramic views of Rynok Square before tour groups and outdoor cafés fill the square.
• Visit on a weekday morning to avoid weekend crowds and markets; use the main square entrances to the surrounding museums and tenement-house courtyards to access lesser-known exhibits that many visitors miss.
