Manila Cathedral
Church Historic Roman Catholic cathedral in Intramuros, Manila
Cathedral in Intramuros serving as the seat of the Archbishop of Manila; visitors come for its rebuilt façade, religious services and proximity to colonial-era streets and museums.
The Manila Cathedral, formally the Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is the seat of the Archbishop of Manila in the historic Intramuros district of Manila. The present Neo-Romanesque structure dates from the mid-20th century reconstruction and is the latest of several churches on the same site.
The cathedral features a Romanesque facade, a vaulted nave, side chapels and a raised main altar; interior details include stained glass windows and a large pipe organ. The plaza in front, Plaza de Roma, is a common meeting point and offers unobstructed views of the cathedral exterior.
A church has occupied this site since the Spanish colonial period, and the building has been repeatedly damaged and rebuilt following earthquakes and wartime destruction. The current cathedral was constructed after World War II as the result of a major rebuilding campaign that replaced the wartime-ruined structure.
Situated within Intramuros, the walled colonial core of Manila, the cathedral faces Plaza de Roma and lies close to other Intramuros landmarks, including Fort Santiago and the National Museum complex in central Manila.
