The Maluku Islands, also called the Moluccas, are an archipelago in eastern Indonesia between Sulawesi and New Guinea. The islands were historically central to the global spice trade, notably for cloves and nutmeg.

Visitors encounter a mix of volcanic islands, rugged interior mountains, rainforest and prolific coral reefs. Historical trading ports, colonial-era forts, spice plantations and vibrant local cultures coexist with marine tourism, especially diving in the Banda Sea and around Ambon.

From the 16th century the Malukus were a focal point of European colonial competition due to the lucrative spice trade; the islands later became part of the Dutch East Indies and are now included in Indonesia’s Maluku and North Maluku provinces.

The archipelago lies in eastern Indonesia, spread across the Banda and Halmahera seas, and includes major islands such as Halmahera, Seram, Ambon and the Banda group.

  • Spice heritage: Historically known as the "Spice Islands" for their role in the global trade of cloves and nutmeg, which shaped colonial interest in the region.
  • Marine highlights: Diving and coral reefs around Ambon, Halmahera and the Banda Sea are internationally recognised for biodiversity and clear water conditions.

What to See #

  • Halmahera: The large northern island with complex coastlines and active volcanoes; forms part of North Maluku province.
  • Seram: A central island with mountainous interior and important rainforest habitat, historically an administrative centre.
  • Banda Islands: A bay and island group in the Banda Sea historically famous for nutmeg production and a focus for colonial trade.

How to Get to Maluku Islands #

The Maluku Islands are reached by air to the region’s main airports - Pattimura Airport (Ambon) or Sultan Babullah Airport (Ternate) - with connections from Jakarta and other Indonesian hubs; from those airports take a taxi or local minibus to the island ferry terminals. Inter‑island travel is by scheduled passenger ferries and smaller speedboats (and occasional regional flights) between Ambon, Seram, Halmahera, the Banda Islands and other islands; once ashore use local roads and taxis to reach villages and beaches.

Tips for Visiting Maluku Islands #

  • Fly into the main regional airports rather than trying to hop between small islands: Ambon (Patimura) and Ternate (Sultan Babullah) are the principal gateways, and from them you can catch scheduled speedboats or local flights to smaller islands.
  • Plan travel in the dry season (roughly April-October) and take the earliest morning boat departures-seas are calmer and inter-island services are less likely to be cancelled, and morning trips avoid the afternoon winds that commonly make crossings rougher.
  • Many visitors focus on Ambon and the better-known islands; don't miss the Banda Islands' nutmeg plantations and colonial-era forts-these are best reached on day trips from Ambon with a licensed operator who handles boat logistics and island permits.
