About Obi (island)

Obi is an island in North Maluku, Indonesia, the largest of the Obi Islands group. It is a tropical island of forest, coast and inland hills and forms part of Indonesia’s Maluku archipelago.

In recent decades the island has attracted mineral and resource development interest, including mining and plantation activity in places, alongside traditional fishing and village communities. Infrastructure and economic activity are concentrated at small ports and district settlements rather than across the whole island.

Geographically Obi lies west of Halmahera within North Maluku province and is one of a chain of densely islanded maritime territories in eastern Indonesia.
