Northern Malta (Mellieħa, St. Paul’s Bay, Golden Bay)

September starts as an extension of summer with warm water (often the sea’s warmest of the year) and air temperatures in the mid-to-high twenties, ideal for swimming and late-season diving. Fewer day-trippers return to the north’s beaches as schools reopen, so you’ll find quieter mornings and excellent visibility underwater. Storms are possible towards the end of the month; still, it’s a favored window for combining sun, sea, and sightseeing without peak-season crush.

Central & Harbour Malta (Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian’s, Mdina)

A late-September harbour morning often feels like a gift: warm, dry days and a still-warm sea make Valletta and Sliema comfortable for walking without the height of summer crush. Temperatures sit in the mid-to-high twenties and visibility is excellent for harbour cruises and coastal photography. It’s an excellent time to combine city museums and a boat trip to the Three Cities or Comino before autumn rains start.

Southern & Southeast Malta (Marsaxlokk, Blue Grotto, Dingli Cliffs, Birżebbuġa)

Early autumn in September often feels like a second summer: sea temperatures are at their warmest and diving visibility is excellent around the Blue Grotto and southern reefs. Air temperatures sit comfortably in the mid-to-high twenties and the season’s crowds thin after schools return. A late-season swim or a boat-based sunset trip is enjoyable, but keep an eye on weather forecasts as autumn storms begin to reappear toward month’s end.

Gozo & Comino (Victoria, Ramla Bay, Dwejra area, Blue Lagoon)

A warm autumn often begins in September, with sea temperatures still very pleasant and daylight long enough for exploring inland archaeological sites before cooler nights set in. Diurnal temperatures commonly sit in the mid-to-high twenties and diving visibility is excellent after summer’s calm. It’s a particularly good month to enjoy fewer day-trippers on Comino while still swimming comfortably.
