How to Get to Malinalco#
Malinalco is best reached by road from nearby cities; the closest major airports are Mexico City’s Benito Juárez (MEX) and Toluca International (TLC). Expect the final leg to be by intercity bus or taxi from Tenancingo or Toluca rather than by train.
Mexico City - Benito Juárez International (MEX): From MEX, head to the southern bus terminals (Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente/Taxqueña area) by metro or taxi and catch a coach toward Tenancingo; from Tenancingo take a local taxi or colectivo for the final ~20-30 km to Malinalco. Typical total travel time is about 2-3 hours depending on traffic.
Toluca International (TLC): Toluca is the closer airport for western-southwestern State of Mexico destinations. From Toluca city you can take intercity buses toward Tenancingo or a direct taxi/transfer toward Malinalco; road travel from Toluca to Malinalco is generally around 1-1.5 hours.
Train: There is no direct national rail service to Malinalco; the nearest rail-connected towns are accessed from Mexico City. Trains are not a practical option for the last leg.
Bus: The most common approach is long-distance bus from Mexico City’s southern terminals (Terminal Taxqueña/Observatorio area) to Tenancingo; buses are frequent and then local colectivos or taxis run between Tenancingo and Malinalco (about 20-30 minutes). If you arrive via Toluca, regional buses and shared taxis connect Toluca → Tenancingo → Malinalco.
How to Get Around Malinalco#
There’s no rail link directly to Malinalco; arriving by air means transferring to buses or taxis from Toluca or Mexico City. For most visitors the best approach is bus to Tenancingo and a short taxi/colectivo onward; renting a car is the easiest way to explore the surrounding area.
- Bus (intercity) (MXN 70-250) - Long-distance buses from Mexico City (southern terminals) and Toluca are the main public option. Buses to Tenancingo are frequent; switch to a local colectivo or taxi for the last 20-30 minutes to Malinalco. Book ahead on busy weekends and holidays.
- Taxi / Private transfer (MXN 400-1,200) - Taxis or private transfers from Tenancingo, Toluca or Mexico City provide door-to-door convenience and are worth it if you have luggage or are traveling in a group. Expect significantly higher cost than bus but much faster and more flexible-agree the fare or use a licensed service.
- Colectivo / Shared taxi (MXN 40-120) - Shared taxis (colectivos) run short regional routes from Tenancingo into Malinalco and are cheap and frequent. They leave when full and are a good budget option for solo travellers or small groups.
- Rental car (MXN 600-1,500/day) - Renting a car gives the most flexibility to explore ruins, viewpoints and nearby towns around Malinalco. Roads are generally in good condition, but watch for narrow mountain sections and limited parking in the historic centre.
- Walking - Malinalco’s centre is compact and very walkable-most attractions (main plaza, monastery, local restaurants) are within easy walking distance once you’re in town.

Shopping in Malinalco#
