Northern Sahara (Timbuktu, Kidal, desert plateaus)

Cooler mornings return by October, with comfortable daytime temperatures in the mid-20s to low 30s°C and nights that are pleasantly crisp in exposed areas. The Harmattan has not yet set in, so visibility is often good-this is one of the more agreeable times for desert itineraries, with fewer dust storms and easier overland travel. Services in towns like Timbuktu and Kidal pick up again after the extreme heat months, making it a good window for cultural visits.

Inner Niger Delta & Mopti region (Mopti, Djenné, Boom and floodplain)

November offers a much drier, more accessible delta-water levels are lower but still sufficient for pirogue travel around Mopti, and the landscape is greener after the rains. This is an excellent month for visiting Djenné’s markets and scheduling guided village walks without dealing with flooded tracks; evenings become cooler and more comfortable for sleeping. Be aware that mosquitos remain present until the waterways have fully dried, so bring netting and repellant.

Central Sahel (Gao, Timbuktu approaches, seasonal savanna)

October brings drier, dustier weather back to the Sahel: daytime temperatures drop into the high 20s to low 30s°C and evenings become noticeably cooler. This transition is comfortable for travelers and overland passage becomes easier as roads firm up; it’s a preferred window for longer drives between Gao, Mopti and Timbuktu outskirts. Remember that the Harmattan will begin to build later in the season, bringing dry haze and cooler mornings.

Bamako & Southern Sudanian Savanna (Bamako, Sikasso, Koutiala)

October delivers more predictable, drier weather and very comfortable daytime temperatures in the high 20s-low 30s°C across Bamako and the south. This is one of the best windows for tourism-water levels have receded, roads firm up and outdoor activities like river cruises and village visits are pleasant. Pack a light jacket for breezy evenings and plan ahead for popular attractions as visitor numbers increase.

Kayes & Western Highlands (Kayes, Bafoulabé, Manantali Reservoir)

October’s drier weather returns comfortably warm daytime temperatures and cooler nights-the landscape retains some green but begins to dry out quickly. This is an attractive window for visiting the western highlands and reservoir with steadily improving roads and reliable local services. Pack a light jacket for mornings and expect clearer conditions for boat trips and hiking on well-worn routes.
