Northern Sahara (Timbuktu, Kidal, desert plateaus)

April is the start of the Sahara’s hot phase: highs commonly push past 35°C and occasionally approach 40°C on exposed plains near Gao and Timbuktu. Winds pick up and fine sand can scour exposed skin; carry a wide-brim hat, long sleeves and liberal sunscreen. Nights remain relatively cool away from dunes, but daytime travel is exhausting-plan activities for dawn and late afternoon and avoid long road legs in peak heat.

Inner Niger Delta & Mopti region (Mopti, Djenné, Boom and floodplain)

April’s heat intensifies before the rains, with the inland delta drying to broad flats under 35-40°C days; the river narrows in places and many seasonal streams are dry. The environment feels exposed and winds may kick up dust; for boat tours that means skippers may run shallower craft over sandbars and transfers can take longer. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and flexible plans in case channels are impractical without a knowledgeable local pilot.

Central Sahel (Gao, Timbuktu approaches, seasonal savanna)

April brings pronounced pre-monsoon heat: many places see daytime temperatures approaching 40°C by late month and the air is extremely dry. The rising heat makes daytime sightseeing uncomfortable and increases the chance of sand-laden winds; travelers should schedule activity for early morning or late afternoon and prioritize shaded, air-conditioned transport. Overland crossings become taxing and small community services can be sparse during this season.

Bamako & Southern Sudanian Savanna (Bamako, Sikasso, Koutiala)

April brings one of the year’s hottest stretches before the rains arrive-temperatures often climb into the mid-30s°C and the risk of heat discomfort rises for outdoor activities. Swimming and shaded gardens around Bamako become popular escape spots, but rural dirt roads can be dusty and thirsty work for overland drivers. Hydration, light clothing and planning for early starts are practical necessities for travelers.

Kayes & Western Highlands (Kayes, Bafoulabé, Manantali Reservoir)

April is one of the hottest months in the west-Kayes often records some of the country’s highest temperatures with frequent daytime highs above 35°C, making mid-day outdoor activity fatiguing. Local transport and walking tours slow down because of heat stress; however, sites such as Bafoulabé and nearby highland scenery can still be reached in the mornings. Bring strong sun protection, light long-sleeved clothing and avoid long hikes in the late afternoon.
