Malé & Kaafu Atoll (capital, nearby resort and local islands)
April marks the shift: humidity climbs and afternoon buildups start to appear as the southwest monsoon edges nearer. Short, warm showers become more likely by late month, but many resorts still enjoy long sunny stretches-ideal for surfing spots around Thulusdhoo which begin to pick up swell. If you plan on island-hopping, be prepared for occasional chop on inter-atoll boats and bring waterproof layers for sudden downpours.
Northern Atolls (Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu)
April sees humidity begin to increase and the first hints of the southwest monsoon-late-afternoon cloud buildups and occasional short showers-reach the northern atolls later in the month. Sea state remains generally acceptable for speedboat connections but expect more chop on exposed crossings; surf-lovers will notice swell start to pick up in southern-facing breaks of the north. Book transfers with operators who can re-route; waterproof bags for luggage are handy as showers are often sudden.
Central Atolls & Baa (Baa Atoll including Hanifaru Bay; Lhaviyani)
April shows early signs of the southwest monsoon’s influence-air humidity rises and short, warm showers begin to appear by the month’s end-but the central atolls still enjoy many sunny days. Surf picks up in some outer reefs and liveaboards start to plan for plankton-rich seasons that can bring larger pelagics. For quieter travel with reasonable weather, book in early April; after that, prepare for occasional rougher transfers and sudden squalls.
Ari Atoll & South-Central Atolls (Alifu and South Ari)
April sees the first hints of monsoon change-the air becomes stickier and afternoon cloud build-ups begin to happen more often, though long sunny stretches persist early in the month. Sea conditions remain mostly favorable but progressively more variable; surf around outside reefs may pick up for board riders. If you want fewer tourists while still enjoying good diving, early April can be a sweet spot-carry light rain protection for sudden showers.
Southern Atolls (Vaavu, Laamu, Gaafu, Addu and Fuvahmulah)
April begins to show the monsoon flip with rising humidity and occasional afternoon showers; the southern atolls often remain a touch windier and more exposed than central reefs. Surf picks up on exposed breaks and local fishing boats may shorten schedules during sudden squalls, so allow margin when planning inter-atoll travel. Have waterproof storage for cameras and be prepared for more variable sea states on longer crossings.
