Majorelle Garden
Garden Botanical garden in Marrakech featuring vibrant blue buildings
Created by painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent in Marrakech, the garden centers on cobalt-blue buildings, water features, cacti and a Berber museum.
Majorelle Garden is a cultivated botanical garden in Marrakech known for its vivid cobalt-blue buildings, water features and an assemblage of exotic and indigenous plants. The garden was created by the French painter Jacques Majorelle in the early 20th century and later restored and maintained as a public site.
Key attractions include the distinctive blue villa, lush planting of cacti, bamboo and palms, reflective water pools and shady paths, together with a small museum focused on Berber culture. The combination of architecture, planting and colour makes it a compact but popular visitor attraction in the city.
The estate was purchased and restored in the 1980s by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, who funded conservation and helped convert parts of the site into museum spaces. Since restoration it has operated as a managed garden with ticketed entry and conservation measures.
Majorelle Garden lies north of Marrakech’s old medina in the Gueliz/Hivernage area, within a short drive from the central city districts.
- Size and timing: The garden covers roughly 2.5 acres and can be busy in mid-morning; buy tickets in advance where possible to avoid long queues.
- Creators and restoration: The site was created by Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and later restored by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and partner Pierre Bergé in the 1980s, who helped preserve it as a public garden.
What to See #
- Majorelle Villa: The blue-painted villa and associated artist's studio that form the visual centrepiece of the garden, relocated and restored during later ownership.
- Berber Museum: The Berber Museum housed within the complex that presents a collection of North African artifacts and illustrates regional cultural history.
- Gardens and planting: The planted gardens featuring cacti, bamboo, palms and water features arranged around pools, paths and shaded pergolas, noted for the intense cobalt "Majorelle" blue used on buildings and structures.

Tips for Visiting Majorelle Garden #
- Buy a timed-entry ticket in advance and aim to arrive at opening to avoid the long queues that build later in the morning-this lets you enjoy the colours and plantings with fewer people around.
- Plan a short combined visit with the nearby Musée Yves Saint Laurent (close by) if you're interested in fashion and design; visiting both on the same outing saves repeat travel across the city.
- Don't rush: allow 45-90 minutes to see the garden's main features and the intimate corners (pools, cactus house) that are often missed by visitors who only photograph the blue villa.
