Designed by Lev Rudnev and built in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the building was completed in 1953 as part of a postwar programme of monumental architecture. It was intended to house expanded university functions and to symbolize Soviet achievement in higher education.
The building stands on Sparrow Hills on the western bank of the Moskva River in southwest Moscow, overlooking the city and accessible from central Moscow by road and public transport.
