Main image

Maiden Castle in Dorset is a large prehistoric hillfort and archaeological site near the town of Dorchester, notable for its extensive earthworks and long sequence of occupation. The visible earthworks date mainly to the Iron Age but the site contains earlier Neolithic and Bronze Age remains.

The monument’s principal features are massive multi-ditched ramparts enclosing roughly 19 hectares, terraces and internal banks that visitors can walk around on defined paths. Information panels and permitted footpaths allow visitors to view the ramparts and interpret the defensive layout; there is no large visitor centre on site.

Archaeological work, most notably by Mortimer Wheeler in the 1930s, revealed multiple construction phases and evidence of long-term occupation from the Neolithic through the Iron Age. Later Roman-period activity is also recorded at the site, showing continued importance of the location across centuries.

The hillfort sits on chalk downland in western Dorset above the surrounding lowlands, a short distance from Dorchester. The site occupies an elevated promontory and is accessed from local roads and country footpaths that cross the surrounding countryside.

  • Excavations: The site was extensively excavated by archaeologist Mortimer Wheeler in the 1930s, producing key evidence on Iron Age occupation and construction phases.
  • Scale: The earthworks enclose an area of roughly 19 hectares, making it one of the largest Iron Age hillforts in Britain.

What to See #

  • Hillfort earthworks: A series of large earthwork ramparts and outer ditches constructed and remodelled in multiple phases during the Iron Age; these enclose the main interior area and define the hillfort's plan.
  • Interior enclosures and excavation areas: Interior area and terrace enclosures that show earlier Neolithic and Bronze Age activity; archaeological layers were exposed in 20th-century excavations.
