Maidan Nezalezhnosti is the central square of Kyiv and the city’s main public space, commonly translated as Independence Square. It functions as a political, commercial and social focal point and is surrounded by major streets and buildings.
The square contains the tall Independence Monument, fountains, and an underground shopping area called Globus. It is widely used for public demonstrations, cultural events and gatherings.

How to Get to Maidan Nezalezhnosti #
Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) is in central Kyiv and is best reached by Kyiv Metro-get off at Maidan Nezalezhnosti or Khreshchatyk stations, which open directly onto or within a short walk of the square. Many surface buses and marshrutkas also stop on Khreshchatyk Street; if arriving by long-distance train, Kyiv’s main stations are a short taxi or metro ride away.

- Visit at first light on a weekday to get unobstructed views of the square and to avoid domestic crowds and street festivals that gather later in the day.
- Use the Maidan Nezalezhnosti metro station exits to step straight onto the square - it's the most direct access and keeps you from walking the busy Khreshchatyk avenue with its shops and traffic.
- Don't rush past the central column: walk the surrounding blocks to find small memorials, plaques and side-street cafés that many visitors miss, and always check local news before visiting in case of planned demonstrations or events.
