Independence Monument (Ukraine) Monument

The Independence Monument stands on Maidan Nezalezhnosti in central Kyiv and was unveiled in 2001 to mark Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. It is a focal civic monument in the main square of the capital.

A prominent landmark in Kyiv, the monument consists of a tall column topped by a gilded female figure (Berehynia). The square around it is paved and pedestrianised, used for ceremonies, public gatherings and as a central meeting place; the monument itself is visible from nearby Khreshchatyk and surrounding streets.

Erected in 2001 to commemorate the 1991 declaration of independence, the site has since served as the focal point for major civic events and large-scale political demonstrations, including the Orange Revolution in 2004 and the Euromaidan protests of 2013-2014. The monument and square have been modified for events and memorials since opening.

The monument sits in downtown Kyiv on Independence Square, adjacent to Khreshchatyk Street and within walking distance of central metro stations. It occupies the heart of the city and is surrounded by shops, government buildings and pedestrian zones.

Maidan Nezalezhnosti is in central Kyiv. By metro take the M2 (blue) line to Maidan Nezalezhnosti station. Many central buses and trams serve Khreshchatyk Street and the surrounding downtown area; the square is a short walk from the National Opera and St. Sophia Cathedral.

• Stand at the base of the column at Maidan and listen: the space carries the shouts and chants of 2013-14 in a way that museums cannot replicate.
• Visit early morning to see fewer people and to photograph the Berehynia statue with soft light; evenings are popular for locals and protesters alike.
• Combine a Maidan visit with the nearby National Art Museum and Khreshchatyk street to understand the monument's civic context.
