About Maid of the Mist#
Maid of the Mist is a historic boat tour operating from the American side of Niagara Falls in Niagara Falls State Park, New York. The company traces its origins to 1846 when ferry and excursion services began on the river and later evolved into the sightseeing cruises known today.
The boats run from a dock inside the state park and take passengers into the Niagara Gorge to the base of the falls, including close approaches to the Horseshoe Falls and American Falls. Typical trips last around 20 minutes and provide panoramic, close-range views of the plunging water and mist from open decks.
The operation began as a ferry and excursion service in the mid-19th century and over time shifted to focus on tourism as road and rail links developed and border crossings changed. Modern Maid of the Mist excursions continue the long-standing attraction of getting close to the falls by water.
The service is based at Niagara Falls State Park on the US side of the Niagara River, adjacent to Prospect Point and a short distance from the international border with Canada. Boarding is in the city of Niagara Falls, New York, within the park grounds.
- Best viewing spot: Front rows on the open decks give the closest views but expect to get wet; disposable ponchos are supplied during the trip.
- Seasonal operation: Operates seasonally from spring through fall; check opening dates and times before you go because service is not year-round.
