Best Time to Visit Mahajanga #

Visit Mahajanga in the cool, dry months of May-October when skies are clear, beaches are at their best and boat trips run reliably. Heavy rains fall November-April, with January-March posing a cyclone risk that often disrupts travel.

Rainy Season
November - April · 24-32°C (75-90°F)
Hot, humid, and wet - daily downpours and lush landscapes make travel slower; good for fewer tourists and waterfalls, but expect mosquitos and muddy roads.
Dry Season
May - October · 17-28°C (63-82°F)
Sunny, breezy, and pleasantly cooler - ideal for beaches, boat trips to nearby islands, and spotting wildlife without rain or many mosquitoes.
Cyclone Season
January - March · 25-31°C (77-88°F)
High risk of storms, heavy flooding, and disrupted travel - I'd avoid scheduling beach or boat plans during these months unless you have flexible arrangements.

How to Get to Mahajanga

Mahajanga is reached primarily by domestic flight to Amborovy Airport (MJN) or by long-distance taxi‑brousse overland from other Malagasy cities; most international visitors fly via Antananarivo (TNR) and connect. The city has a small airport and a main taxi‑brousse station for regional road links.

By Air

Mahajanga / Amborovy Airport (MJN): The city’s airport is Amborovy (MJN), a small domestic airport just outside Mahajanga. Taxis from the airport to the city centre take roughly 20-35 minutes; expect to pay about 30,000-50,000 MGA (~8-13 USD) for a fixed-rate taxi shared between passengers or slightly more for a private taxi.

Antananarivo / Ivato International Airport (TNR): Most international arrivals land at Ivato (TNR) in Antananarivo; regular domestic connections to Mahajanga are operated by Tsaradia (Air Madagascar’s domestic arm). Flight time TNR-MJN is about 1 hour 10 minutes; domestic fares typically range from ~250,000 to 600,000 MGA (~65-160 USD) depending on season and booking time. If you prefer overland travel from Antananarivo there are long-distance taxi‑brousse services (see Bus paragraph) that take 10-12 hours.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no regular intercity passenger train service to Mahajanga for travellers - the island’s passenger rail network is very limited and does not serve this city. Overland travel is done by road (taxi‑brousse) or domestic flight instead.

Bus (Taxi‑brousse): Intercity travel is dominated by taxi‑brousse minibuses that leave from the main gare routière (taxi‑brousse station) serving Mahajanga. Typical routes include long runs to Antananarivo and regional towns; Antananarivo-Mahajanga by taxi‑brousse takes around 10-12 hours and fares commonly range from about 50,000-80,000 MGA (~13-21 USD). Buses vary widely in comfort - book a seat in advance for busy periods and expect stops along the way.

How to Get Around Mahajanga

Mahajanga is easiest to reach by a short domestic flight into Amborovy (MJN) or by taxi‑brousse on the main road from Antananarivo; there's no passenger train service. Within the city, short distances make walking and short taxi rides the most practical modes, while car hire or boats are best for day trips outside town.
