The Maderas Volcano Natural Reserve protects Volcán Maderas, a dormant volcanic cone on Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua. The summit reaches 1,394 metres and contains a crater lake surrounded by cloud forest.
Hikers follow steep trails rising from the island villages through montane and cloud forest to the summit crater and its small lagoon; ascents are typically full-day and physically demanding. The reserve also offers views across Lake Nicaragua to the neighboring cone, Volcán Concepción, and lowland farmland around Moyogalpa and Altagracia.
Maderas is a volcanic cone formed by eruptions in the Pleistocene and Holocene; it is considered dormant with no recorded historical eruptions. Human use has been agricultural on the lower slopes, while the upper forested areas have been left largely natural and are now managed for conservation and tourism.
The reserve occupies the southern cone of Ometepe Island in Rivas Department, Nicaragua, within Lake Nicaragua. The main access points are the island towns of Moyogalpa and Altagracia reached by ferry from the mainland port of San Jorge.

How to Get to Maderas Volcano Natural Reserve #
Maderas is on Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua. Visitors first reach San Jorge or San Carlos on the mainland, then take a ferry to Moyogalpa or San José de Ometepe. From Moyogalpa it’s a 20-60 minute drive by local taxi or shuttle to the trailheads on Maderas; many visitors hire guides in Moyogalpa.
