Concepción (volcano)

Concepción is a steep, symmetrical stratovolcano that forms the northern cone of Ometepe island in Lake Nicaragua. It rises to roughly 1,600 metres and presents a near-perfect conical silhouette above the lake.

The volcano is popular with experienced hikers who attempt guided ascents to the summit crater along steep, often muddy trails; lower slopes are cultivated in places and feature forested sections. Boat access from mainland ports brings visitors to Ometepe’s ferry towns such as Moyogalpa.

Geologically active throughout the Holocene, Concepción has produced eruptions in historical times and is monitored for volcanic activity; visitors should check local advisories before planning climbs. The volcano sits in Rivas Department and dominates the island landscape.

Ometepe island is located in Lake Nicaragua and the volcano sits centrally on the island, with Moyogalpa and other small towns on its western shore serving as usual access points.

Concepción is the large stratovolcano that dominates Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua. To reach it, take the ferry from San Jorge (on the mainland near Rivas) to Moyogalpa on Ometepe - regular ferries and fast passenger boats operate from San Jorge; from Managua many travellers drive or take a shuttle to San Jorge. From Moyogalpa you can hire a taxi, moto-taxi or guide to reach the base of Concepción; most climbs start within a short drive from Moyogalpa and require hiking from the local trailheads (arrange transport and guide in advance).

• Plan your approach via Ometepe island (ferries land at Moyogalpa) and arrange onward transport to the Concepción trailhead in advance - the volcano is remote and logistics on the island (ferries, taxis) determine your start time.
• Start pre-dawn if attempting the summit: early mornings give the best chance of clear views over Lake Nicaragua and avoid the mid-day clouds and heat that often roll in on tropical volcanoes.
• Hire a local guide and confirm route conditions with them before you go - Concepción's slopes are steep, weather can change rapidly, and local guides know the safest ascent/descent lines and current access rules.
