Maderas
Volcano Volcano on Ometepe Island with cloud forest trails
An extinct volcano on Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua with a cloud forested summit and crater lake; hikers tackle steep, muddy trails for panoramic island and lake views.
Maderas is a volcanic cone on Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua, in the Rivas Department. It is a lower, forested volcano notable for its summit crater lake and cloud forest on the upper slopes.
Hiking routes rise through agricultural lowlands into dense cloud forest and up to the crater rim and lake; the summit area supports distinct montane vegetation and cooler conditions compared with the lowlands. The volcano sits alongside the higher Concepción cone on the island.
Local guides are commonly used for ascents because of steep, muddy trails and changing weather; the summit crater and forest are primary reasons people climb Maderas rather than the more strenuous Concepción.
The volcano occupies the southern portion of Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua; the island is accessed by ferry services from the mainland port towns in Rivas Department.
- Hiking and conditions: The volcano forms the southern end of Ometepe Island and has a crater lake at the summit; trails are steep, often muddy, and route-finding can be difficult in poor visibility so guides are commonly used.
What to See #
- Summit crater lake: A circular crater lake occupying the volcanic summit crater, often shrouded in cloud and surrounded by remnants of cloud forest.
- Cloud forest slopes: Lush montane and cloud forest slopes with a mosaic of secondary forest and cultivated land at lower elevations, supporting diverse flora and microclimates.
How to Get to Maderas #
Volcán Maderas is on Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua. The usual approach is to drive from the Rivas/San Jorge area on the mainland to the San Jorge ferry terminal (drive time from Rivas roughly 20-40 minutes depending on traffic), then take a regular ferry to Moyogalpa on Ometepe. From Moyogalpa you can reach Maderas’ trailheads by local taxi or colectivo bus-road transfers on Ometepe typically take 20-60 minutes depending on the exact trailhead; the hike then starts from the roadside parking/entry points.
Ferries run regularly between San Jorge and Moyogalpa; if you do not have a vehicle, take bus or taxi to San Jorge, the ferry, then local transport on Ometepe to the base of Maderas.
Tips for Visiting Maderas #
- Climb Maderas early in the morning to get clearer summit views and to avoid the frequent midday cloud and mist that fill the crater's cloud forest and obscure the lagoon.
- Hire a local guide from Moyogalpa or nearby villages - trails become steep, muddy and slippery in places and local guides know the safest routes and typical weather patterns on Ometepe.
- Combine the hike with a short visit to Moyogalpa to arrange transport and a guide the day before; trailheads are accessed from local roads on Ometepe so logistics are best handled on the island.
