Melchior Ndadaye International Airport (BJM): Bujumbura’s Melchior Ndadaye International (BJM) is the main airport for accessing southern Burundi, including Mabanda (Makamba Province). From BJM to southern towns you travel by road; journey times depend on routing and road conditions and are typically several hours for southern provincial centres.
Kigali International Airport (KGL): Many visitors use Kigali then continue overland to southern Burundi. Road transfers from Kigali to southern Burundi commonly take 4-6 hours and cross the Rwanda-Burundi border; schedules and fares vary by operator.
