The Lustgarten is a public lawn and historical garden area on Museum Island in central Berlin, adjacent to major cultural institutions. It has served various civic and ceremonial functions over its history.

Today the Lustgarten functions as a landscaped open space used for relaxation and as a vantage point for the surrounding museums and the Berlin Cathedral. Its central position makes it a common stopping point for Museum Island visitors and city walkers.

Originally laid out as a formal garden, the site was repurposed over time for military parades, exhibitions and large gatherings before being restored as a public lawn and park area in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Lustgarten sits on Museum Island in Berlin-Mitte, between the Altes Museum and the Berlin Cathedral, close to the Museum Island U-Bahn and the historic boulevard Unter den Linden.

The site is in Berlin’s center and easily reached on foot from nearby central stops.

• Visit the Lustgarten early in the morning on weekdays to enjoy the open sightlines to Berlin Cathedral and the museums before tour groups arrive; the park is much quieter before museum opening hours.
• Enter Museum Island from the Altes Museum/Unter den Linden side to get the classic framed view of the Lustgarten with the cathedral behind it - that approach also places you close to the main information boards and museum entrances.
