It opened in the 2000s as a private initiative and quickly became a popular attraction because of its accessible approach to Cold War history; the museum complements larger historical narratives found across Berlin’s museums and memorials. Its collections and displays have been updated over time to include new research and visitor-focused programming.

The museum is located on the Spree in central Berlin near Museum Island and the Alexanderplatz area, within easy walking distance of major central transport hubs.

The closest rail stops are S‑Bahn Hackescher Markt (several S‑bahn lines) - about an 8-10 minute walk along the river - and the U‑Bahnhof Märkisches Museum (U2), roughly a 3-5 minute walk. From Berlin Hauptbahnhof or Alexanderplatz it’s an easy short taxi, bike or S‑/U‑bahn ride into the museum island area; driving is possible but city-center parking is limited.
