Main image

Lulu Island is the principal island in the Fraser River delta that forms the bulk of the City of Richmond in British Columbia, adjacent to Vancouver. The island contains residential, commercial and agricultural areas and has long been a focus of settlement and farming in the delta.

The island offers a mix of urban amenities and riverside recreation - village heritage in Steveston, waterfront and dyke trails, parks and local beaches. Steveston retains preserved fishing-industry buildings and a working harbour, while other parts of the island are suburban and agricultural.

Much of the island is low-lying reclaimed delta land protected by dikes and drainage infrastructure. The island sits immediately south of Vancouver across the North Arm of the Fraser River and is connected to Vancouver and surrounding municipalities by several road and rail bridges.

  • Urban role: Forms the bulk of the City of Richmond and sits in the Fraser River delta directly south of Vancouver, connected by multiple bridges.
  • Historic site: Steveston village on the island is the site of historic salmon canneries and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site.

What to See #

  • Steveston: A historic fishing village on the island's southwest edge that preserves canneries and fishery heritage buildings.
  • Richmond city centre: The city centre and commercial areas that occupy the island's northern and central parts, including residential neighbourhoods and parks.
  • Dykelands: Low-lying agricultural and dyke-protected land that makes up much of the island's south and east, used for market farming.
