Delta, British Columbia Area

Delta is a city in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia located on the delta of the Fraser River and forming part of the Metro Vancouver region. It comprises three main communities - Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta - each with distinct residential and commercial character.

The area includes agricultural lands, coastal shoreline and urban neighbourhoods. Tsawwassen hosts the BC Ferries terminal that provides vehicle and passenger connections to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, while Ladner contains a compact waterfront village centre.

Delta developed from small river settlements into a suburban municipality within greater Vancouver while retaining farmland and important coastal habitats such as Boundary Bay.

The city lies southwest of Vancouver on the south shore of the Fraser River and includes low-lying coastal areas and transport infrastructure linking the region.

Delta is a municipality south of Vancouver on the Fraser River and includes Ladner and Tsawwassen. By car from Vancouver follow Highway 99 south (and use Highway 91/Alex Fraser Bridge for access to central Delta); BC-17 leads to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal at Delta’s southwestern tip. Driving from downtown Vancouver to Delta locations typically ranges from about 25-40 km depending on your destination in Delta; the Tsawwassen ferry terminal is a short walk (about 5-10 minutes) into the nearby Tsawwassen town area once you disembark.

• Visit the Reifel Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island for the best birdwatching in Delta - access is via Westham Island Road and winter migration (November-March) brings large flocks and rare waterfowl.
• Head to Ladner Village for a quieter waterfront stroll and local shops outside peak weekend hours; the village is often overlooked by visitors who stick to the major beaches.
• Pick up maps and tide/parking info before you go (local parking at Boundary Bay and the sanctuary fills early on weekends) and aim for weekdays or early mornings to avoid the busiest times.
