The Lower Valley of the Omo is a large river valley in southern Ethiopia recognised for its combination of long-term archaeological records and the presence of numerous indigenous ethnic groups. The landscape includes riverine floodplains, seasonal wetlands and dry lowland areas.
Archaeological sites in the valley have produced stone tools and fossil material documenting ancient human activity, and the region remains important for studies of human prehistory. The valley is also home to a range of contemporary pastoral and agro-pastoral communities with distinct cultural traditions.
Over time the valley has been the focus of archaeological research and continues to be inhabited by diverse ethnic groups whose livelihoods are closely tied to the river system. Conservation and development pressures have influenced land use patterns in recent decades.
Geographically the valley follows the lower stretches of the Omo River in southern Ethiopia, running toward Lake Turkana in the broader regional drainage; terrain ranges from river channels to dry lowland plains.
- Cultural and archaeological significance: The valley is notable both for its archaeological sites with very long sequences of human occupation and for its living cultural diversity of riverine and highland communities.
- Access considerations: Access to many areas requires local guides and permits; travel in the valley is often arranged through specialised operators due to remoteness and community sensitivities.
