Lower Valley of the Awash
Historical Site Archaeological region with early hominin fossil discoveries
Ethiopia’s Lower Awash valley contains fossil sites yielding early hominin remains, riverine wetlands and archaeological settlements. Researchers and tourists visit for paleoanthropological sites, Rift Valley geology and archaeological fieldwork.
The Lower Valley of the Awash in Ethiopia is a UNESCO-listed paleoanthropological landscape in the Afar Region, internationally important for fossil hominin discoveries that have shaped understanding of human evolution.
Key field sites within the valley have produced significant hominid remains, including the partial skeleton known as “Lucy” (Australopithecus afarensis) discovered at Hadar in 1974, along with associated faunal and archaeological material. The area contains stratified deposits that document several million years of hominid and environmental history.
Excavations and research have been conducted by international teams since the mid-20th century, producing a long record of paleoanthropological discovery and interpretation. Many of the field sites are active research areas and material from the valley is displayed in museums and research institutions.
The valley lies in the Afar Region of Ethiopia, an arid rift area characterised by broad plains and river terraces; the fossil sites are located along the Awash River corridor within this rift landscape.
- Paleoanthropological importance: The valley contains a sequence of fossil-bearing deposits that have yielded hominid remains and tools dating back millions of years and have been pivotal to the study of human evolution.
- Visiting and interpretation: Many of the principal excavation sites are remote field locations visited mainly by researchers; viewing of finds is typically through published exhibits and museum displays rather than open archaeological parks.
What to See #
- Hadar: Hadar site, where the partial skeleton known as "Lucy" (Australopithecus afarensis) was discovered in 1974 and has been central to research on early hominins.
- Dikika and surrounding fossil sites: Dikika and other fossil localities in the Awash valley that have produced additional hominid and faunal remains spanning several million years of prehistory.
Tips for Visiting Lower Valley of the Awash #
- Visit in the dry season (roughly October-February) for easier travel on dirt tracks and clearer conditions at fossil sites; the wet season can make remote roads impassable.
- Coordinate with local authorities and reputable guides before you go - the Lower Awash area contains archaeologically sensitive sites and many areas require permissions or accompaniment.
- Combine a field visit with museum stops (for example the National Museum in Addis Ababa) to see key finds and context that many day visitors miss while in the field.
