How to Get to Lodwar

Lodwar is most commonly reached by domestic flight from Nairobi into Lodwar Airport (LOK). Overland travel is possible but lengthy; local buses and matatus serve regional connections.

By Air

Lodwar Airport (LOK): Lodwar has a small regional airport (LOK) with scheduled domestic flights from Nairobi and other Kenyan hubs operated by domestic carriers. Flight time from Nairobi is around 1-1.5 hours; from the airport a taxi into town typically takes 10-20 minutes and fares are modest (pay locally).

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi) (NBO): For international arrivals fly into Nairobi (NBO) then take a domestic flight to Lodwar. Overland transfers from Nairobi to Lodwar are possible but very long (dozens of hours) - a domestic flight is the practical choice for most visitors.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no rail service to Lodwar; the Kenyan standard-gauge railway does not extend to Turkana County.

Bus / Overland: Long-distance buses and matatus run between Lodwar and other towns in Turkana and northern Kenya. Road travel can be slow due to road conditions and seasonal factors; use reputable operators and allow plenty of time. Shared minibuses and bush taxis are common for regional trips.

How to Get Around Lodwar #

Lodwar’s centre is walkable for short trips, but most people get around by boda-boda (motorcycle taxi), shared matatus and minibuses for longer distances. Roads outside town can be rough and services infrequent. Boda fares are low but negotiate or agree prices in advance; plan journeys with daylight in mind, especially when travelling into rural areas.
