How to Get to Locarno
Locarno is best reached by rail from nearby Swiss cities or by road from Milan. Lugano and Milan airports serve as the main air gateways; once in the region, regional trains and the local bus network make getting around straightforward.
Lugano Airport (LUG): Lugano is the closest small airport to Locarno with limited regional flights. From Lugano you can take regional trains to Locarno via Bellinzona; the train journey is about 40-60 minutes and single fares on SBB/TILO regional services are typically around CHF 6-12 depending on tariff and zone.
Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP): For international arrivals Malpensa is the most common option. Take the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale (about 50 minutes, fare ≈ €13.30), then rail services via Domodossola and the Centovalli/Vigezzina line into Locarno; allow 3+ hours door‑to‑door by public transport, or rent a car for roughly a 2-2.5 hour drive.
Train: Locarno railway station is on the SBB/TILO regional network and is served by the S20 Bellinzona-Locarno regional trains (journey time ~25-30 minutes from Bellinzona). Single regional fares within Ticino are typically CHF 5-8 depending on zones; longer connections from Milan involve regional/EuroCity segments plus the Domodossola→Locarno line.
