The Lepontine Alps are a sub-range of the central Alps located on the border region between southern Switzerland and northern Italy, including parts of the Swiss canton of Ticino. The range comprises rugged alpine peaks, passes and valleys used for transport and recreation.

Alpine activities such as hiking, mountaineering and skiing take place on the higher slopes, and traditional alpine valleys contain small towns and pastoral landscapes. The area is crossed by several historical mountain passes that have linked northern and southern Alpine regions for centuries.

Geologically and geographically the Lepontine Alps form part of the main Alpine chain, with high peaks, steep valleys and mixed rock types. The range sits between other central-Alpine massifs and is reachable from Swiss and Italian mountain towns.

Located in the central Alps, the Lepontine Alps include territory in southern Switzerland’s Ticino and extend into adjacent Italian regions, forming part of the high mountainous spine of the Alps.

• High alpine terrain: Much of the range is alpine in character, with peaks rising above 3,000 metres and a mix of glaciated and rocky terrain in higher parts.

The Lepontine Alps in Ticino are typically reached from the Swiss national transport spine: drive or take the train through the Gotthard (A2) corridor to Bellinzona or the Locarno area, then transfer to regional roads and mountain passes to reach trailheads. Swiss Federal Railways runs frequent trains to Bellinzona and Locarno; from those towns local buses and cableways serve access points into the Lepontine Alps, with final approach usually on foot for hiking routes.

• Use Swiss rail and PostBus connections to reach trailheads on the Ticino side - many Lepontine Alps approaches are best accessed by regional public transport rather than by private car.
• Avoid the most popular ridges by starting hikes from smaller valleys (for example remote valleys in Ticino) and aim for weekday starts - the main passes and huts can be crowded in high summer.
• Check seasonal pass status: high cols in the Lepontines frequently retain snow well into summer, so verify current conditions and alpine hut openings before planning routes.
