Park Historic Chicago zoo with free public admission
Historic free zoo in Chicago’s Lincoln Park featuring 19th-century animal houses, modern exhibits and family programs; common stop on city park walks.
Lincoln Park Zoo is a city zoo in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on Chicago’s North Side, founded in 1868 and notable for offering free admission. It occupies roughly 35 acres along the lakefront and is one of the oldest public zoos in the United States.
The zoo houses a broad collection of mammals, birds and reptiles across a mix of historic buildings and modern enclosures, with around 1,000-1,200 individual animals representing roughly 200 species. Highlights include the large indoor-outdoor ape habitats, the historic Kovler Lion House, a children’s Farm-in-the-Zoo and the wetlands-style Nature Boardwalk that supports waterfowl and shorebirds.
Lincoln Park Zoo began as a public menagerie in the 19th century and expanded through the 20th and 21st centuries with new exhibit buildings and conservation programs. Over time it has modernized many older structures while maintaining public-access programming and education.
The zoo sits on the lakeward edge of the Lincoln Park district, immediately north of downtown Chicago and adjacent to Lake Michigan - about 1.2 miles (approximately 2 km) north of the Loop. It is reachable by public transit and by foot from the popular park and lakefront pathways.

- Seasonal event: ZooLights is an annual winter light festival that draws large crowds; evenings during the holiday season are busiest.
- Best viewing times: Best animal activity is often early morning or late afternoon; the Nature Boardwalk offers reliable birdwatching close to the city.
