Liberia in May: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Coastal Lowlands (Monrovia & Atlantic Coast)

By May the daily pattern is clearer: hot, humid mornings give way to strong convective storms in the afternoon and evening, and rivers such as the St. Paul start to swell. Surfing and fishing excursions are often cancelled with short notice; the beaches can be littered with debris after strong tides. For photographers the clouds and low light make for intense greens, but pack quick-drying clothing and plan for delays getting outside Monrovia.

Southeast Rainforest & Riverine Lowlands (Harper, Zwedru, Grand Gedeh)

May’s rains intensify; the rainforest green deepens and tracks quickly become muddy corridors, particularly around Zwedru and the Konobo area. River transport is commonly used where roads are poor, but strong rains may lift river levels and complicate smaller canoe passages. For wildlife watching the wet season is rewarding - many species are active - but plan for insect-heavy evenings and flexible schedules.

Central Rolling Hills & Cocoa Country (Bong, Gbarnga, Kakata)

May’s rains intensify and river levels rise; bridges over minor streams can be difficult to cross and microbus routes slow dramatically after storms. Birdwatching improves with foliage density, but hiking becomes trickier because paths turn slippery. Bring a sturdy pair of gaiters, waterproof duffel bags, and expect that itineraries between Kakata, Gbarnga and rural villages may need contingency days.

Northern Plains & Lofa County (Voinjama, Foya, Kolahun)

May is markedly wetter: heavy afternoon rains and humid conditions become common, turning dirt tracks into churned clay especially after sustained storms. Local ferries and small bridges can be affected and some rural settlements become harder to reach by road. For visitors, wildlife and birdlife pickup near the forest edge is excellent, but take mosquito prophylaxis and waterproof layers.

Nimba & Eastern Highlands (Ganta, Sanniquellie, Yekepa)

May is thoroughly in the wet season - persistent rains make long hikes challenging and some remote passes are often closed due to slippery conditions. Vegetation is lush and waterfalls that feed into the eastern valleys become impressive but trails can erode quickly. If planning mountain treks, build in contingency days and be prepared for rapidly changing weather and cooler nights at altitude.
