Li River
Stream Scenic karst river renowned for limestone peaks
Between Guilin and Yangshuo, the Li River is famed for karst peaks and rice‑terraced riversides; popular activities include scenic boat cruises, riverside cycling and bamboo rafting amid photogenic limestone scenery.
The Li River is a river in Guangxi province, China, famed for its dramatic karst landscape between the cities of Guilin and Yangshuo. The most-touristed stretch runs roughly 83 kilometres and is internationally recognised for its scenery.
Tourist cruises and river trips focus on the Guilin-to-Yangshuo section, offering views of steep limestone karst peaks, limestone caves and cultivated riverbanks; many cruises take four to five hours for the principal day-run. Boat trips, short hikes and cycling around Yangshuo are common ways to experience riverside scenery and rural villages.
The river and its surrounding terrain have been represented in Chinese art and poetry for centuries and became a modern tourist destination in the 20th century with the growth of river cruising and scenic tourism. Infrastructure and tour operations expanded from the late 20th century to serve growing visitor numbers.
Originating in the karst uplands near Guilin, the river flows south to Yangshuo and then further toward the Xi River system; Guilin city lies on its upper reaches and is the main regional transport hub for visitors.

How to Get to Li River #
The Li River region is typically accessed from Guilin. Many visitors take the scenic river cruise from Guilin downstream toward Yangshuo (boats depart Guilin’s piers for the Guilin-Yangshuo route), arriving in Yangshuo where local docks are a short walk or cycle ride from town. Alternatively, regular coaches run from Guilin coach stations to Yangshuo (journey about 1.5-2 hours). By road Guilin to Yangshuo is roughly 60-70 km (around 1-1.5 hours) on regional roads; from Yangshuo it is easy to reach popular river viewpoints by bike, taxi or short local transfer.
Tips for Visiting Li River #
- Choose an early-morning departure for the Guilin-Yangshuo stretch to catch the best chance of mist among the karst peaks and to avoid the busiest tourist boats later in the day.
- Book tickets in advance for high season or Chinese national holidays and consider a smaller/longer cruise that ends in Yangshuo so you can disembark and explore the countryside by bike or on a short bamboo-raft trip-many visitors who only do the shorter sightseeing boats miss the rural scenery downstream.
- If you want fewer crowds, ask for smaller-boat or private-boat options when booking; larger tourist boats concentrate in the main mid-day hours while smaller vessels provide closer, quieter views of the river scenery.
Best Time to Visit Li River #
