Dragon Backbone Rice Terraces

GRDN Extensive rice terraces carved into Guangxi mountains

The Dragon’s Backbone rice terraces near Guilin showcase tiered paddy fields and minority villages; tourists hike ridge trails, visit lookout platforms and stay in local guesthouses to observe rice cultivation.

Overview The Dragon Backbone Rice Terraces (often called Longji or Longji Rice Terraces) are a large system of carved rice paddies in Longsheng/Longji area of Guangxi, China, created by local Zhuang and Yao farming communities over many centuries.

What visitors find Terraced fields cascade across steep hillsides into layered contours that give the area its English name. Two principal viewpoint villages, Ping’an and Dazhai, provide established trails, lookout platforms, and guesthouses overlooking the stepped paddies. Seasonal contrasts are strong - flooded fields in spring mirror the sky, while late summer and autumn show dense, golden rice.

History Local Zhuang and Yao communities developed and maintained the terraces over several centuries to expand arable land on steep slopes; the system was expanded during the Ming and Qing periods and has continued as a working agricultural landscape. Villages and footpaths evolved alongside the terraces to support irrigation and rice cultivation.

Location Sited in Longsheng County in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the terraces are inland from Guilin and accessed via mountain roads from nearby towns, with the main viewing villages located on the slopes above the valley.

  • Best seasons: Flooded paddies in spring create reflective surfaces used by photographers, while late summer and autumn show golden ripened rice - two distinctly different visual seasons.
  • Access and trails: Main vantage points and short walking trails connect village viewpoints rather than long guided routes; expect laddered paths and stone steps between terraces.

What to See #

  • Ping'an Village: A cluster of viewing villages and stepped paddies arranged on steep hillsides; the best-known are Ping'an Village and Dazhai Village, both served by networked footpaths and lookouts offering panoramic views of the terraces.
  • Dazhai Village: A larger village and popular sunrise viewpoint with trails that traverse multiple levels of terraces and provide access to lower valley rice fields.

How to Get to Dragon Backbone Rice Terraces #

The Dragon’s Backbone (Longji) rice terraces are in Longsheng County north of Guilin. From Guilin take a regular coach from Guilin bus stations to Longsheng/Longji (about 1.5-2 hours); from Longsheng town local shuttle minibuses or hired jeeps run up the mountain (a further 30-45 minutes) to the terrace villages and parking areas. By car it’s roughly an hour-and‑a‑half drive from central Guilin (distance ~70-90 km); most visitors then walk 10-30 minutes from the drop‑off points to the main viewpoints.

Tips for Visiting Dragon Backbone Rice Terraces #

  • Visit at first light for mist and soft morning light (or late afternoon for golden-hour photos) - mid-day is busiest and washes out the terraces' textures.
  • Choose which village to start from: Ping'an for classic close-up terrace views and village access, or Dazhai if you want the cable car and higher panoramic viewpoints.
  • Take the ridge trail between villages rather than only staying at the main viewing platforms - the walking routes give less-crowded, varied perspectives and pass local tea houses.
  • Buy local snacks or a small guidebook in the villages and bring cash; visiting a Zhuang or Yao village and a terrace-side tea house is a detail many visitors skip.
