The cathedral is an important pilgrimage site and a designated starting point for the Via Podiensis branch of the Camino de Santiago. Architectural highlights include a robust Romanesque nave and ornate portals characteristic of 11th- and 12th-century church construction; the site also houses a revered statue of the Virgin known locally as the Black Madonna.
