Latvia in October: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Riga & Gulf Coast (Rīgas jūras līcis and Jūrmala)

October: Atlantic storms pick up pace and the first serious gales and heavy rainfalls usually arrive; expect windy, wet days with temperatures around 5-10°C and rising likelihood of flooding in low-lying coastal paths. City sightseeing remains comfortable when wrapped up, but sea swimming is out and some coastal roads or minor sites may be temporarily closed after storms. Waterproof boots and a good hooded jacket will keep you moving between museums and indoor venues.

Kurzeme & West Coast (Liepāja, Ventspils, Cape Kolka and Kuldīga)

October: Autumn storms become more frequent and heavy rains can flood low-lying coastal paths; daytime highs commonly sit around 5-10°C. This is a dramatic time to visit if you don’t mind wind and wet weather - the beaches and sand dunes look raw and powerful. Travel insurance and robust footwear are sensible, and check ferry schedules if you’re island-hopping or planning sea-based trips.

Vidzeme Uplands & Gauja Valley (Sigulda, Cēsis, Valmiera)

October: The autumn rains and wind increase, and temperatures often fall to 2-8°C with the first hard frosts possible late in the month. Trails become muddier and some tourist services for summer activities wind down, though castles and museums stay open. If you don’t mind crisp, occasionally wet weather, you’ll have the valleys largely to yourself - bring waterproof boots and a warm hat for chilly days.

Zemgale Plains & Southern Latvia (Jelgava, Bauska, Rundāle)

October: Autumn color dominates and temperatures fall to around 3-9°C; damp days and winds off exposed plains increase, making outdoor touring bracing. Fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices make this a good shoulder-season time, but some small attractions reduce opening hours. Waterproof boots and warm outerwear will make exploring manor parks and rural trails comfortable.

Latgale & Eastern Lakes (Daugavpils, Rēzekne, Lake Rāzna, Lubāns)

October: Autumn color peaks and temperatures drop to about 3-9°C; lakes and marshes become quieter as migratory birds pass through. Trails become muddier and some roads to remote lakes may be slippery; indoor cultural attractions in Daugavpils and Rēzekne become appealing alternatives. Pack waterproof boots, warm layers and allow extra travel time as rural roads become more challenging in wet weather.
