Lào Cai is usually reached from Hanoi by overnight train or by intercity bus; Noi Bai (Hanoi) is the nearest international airport. The train to Lào Cai is popular for overnight travel, while buses are faster by day.
Noi Bai International Airport (HAN): Hanoi’s Noi Bai is the main international airport for travellers heading to Lào Cai/Sapa. From Hanoi you can travel to Lào Cai by overnight train or by bus; road travel is typically 5-6 hours by express bus, while train services (Hanoi-Lào Cai) take about 8 hours overnight - fares vary by vehicle/class (buses ~VND 150,000-300,000; trains ~VND 120,000-500,000 depending on berth/class).
Other regional airports: There is no regular commercial airport in Lào Cai city itself for scheduled international flights; Noi Bai remains the standard air gateway.
Train: Hanoi-Lào Cai trains (operated by Vietnam Railways and private tourist sleepers) depart Hanoi in the evening and arrive at Lào Cai early morning - journey time ~8 hours. Trains terminate at Lào Cai Railway Station, which is the usual rail gateway for Sapa.
