How to Get to Lai Chau
Lai Châu is best reached by road from regional airports or Hanoi. The closest regional airport with scheduled flights is Dien Bien Phu (DBP); most international travelers fly into Hanoi (Noi Bai) and continue by bus or private transfer.
Dien Bien Phu Airport (DBP): Small regional flights operate between Hanoi (Noi Bai) and Dien Bien Phu; from DBP you can take a shared minibus or local bus to Lai Châu (journey ~3-4 hours). Typical transfer minibuses cost around VND 150,000-250,000 and take roughly 3 hours, depending on road conditions.
Noi Bai International Airport (HAN): Hanoi’s Noi Bai is the main international gateway for reaching Lai Châu. From Hanoi take an intercity bus from My Dinh bus station to Lai Châu (journey ~6-8 hours); tickets typically cost VND 200,000-350,000.
Train: Lai Châu has no direct rail link. The nearest mainline railheads for northwest Vietnam are Lao Cai (for Sapa and the northern rail corridor) and Dien Bien Phu (no regular passenger rail). If you prefer rail for part of the trip, travel by train to Lao Cai or Hanoi and continue to Lai Châu by road.
Bus: Intercity buses and private shuttle vans are the practical option. Regular services run from Hanoi (My Dinh) to Lai Châu in about 6-8 hours for VND 200,000-350,000; from Dien Bien Phu minibuses and local buses take about 3 hours for VND 150,000-250,000.
How to Get Around Lai Chau #
Lai Châu city centre is compact and easy to explore on foot for short visits; many attractions and guesthouses sit within a few blocks. Motorbike taxis (xe ôm) and local metered taxis handle short hops; ask drivers to confirm the fare or use an app if available. For longer journeys there are interprovincial buses and minivans to other northwestern towns. Expect services to be less frequent than in bigger Vietnamese cities - plan transfers in advance and keep cash on hand.
