Lalbagh Fort
Fort 17th-century Mughal fort complex in Dhaka
A 17th‑century Mughal fort complex in Old Dhaka with a mosque, tomb and museum; visited for Mughal architecture and urban history within Bangladesh’s capital.
Lalbagh Fort is a 17th-century Mughal-era fort complex in the Old Dhaka area of Bangladesh, begun in the late 1600s. It is notable for its surviving fortified walls, a mausoleum, mosque and audience hall within a compact precinct.
Highlights inside the complex include the mosque with its decorated facades, the Tomb of Pari Bibi and the Diwan Khana (audience hall), all set within walled gardens and courtyards. The compact site is often visited as part of a short historical circuit through Old Dhaka.
Construction was begun under a Mughal provincial governor in the late 17th century but halted when the chief patron died, leaving the fort incomplete; the tombs and mosque were completed and have been the focus of later conservation. Over subsequent centuries the complex has been maintained and restored as a notable Mughal monument in Dhaka.
The fort sits in the historical core of Dhaka city; it is within the modern urban fabric of the capital and is easily reached from central Dhaka by road.
- Incomplete construction: The fort complex is incomplete; construction began in the late 17th century and work stopped after key patrons died, leaving some planned features unfinished.
- Central Dhaka location: The site sits within old Dhaka and is easily reached from central city areas, making it a short visit combined with nearby historical sites.
What to See #
- Jami Mosque: The main mosque (Jami Masjid) within the complex dates from the Mughal-era construction and features period architectural elements and ornamentation.
- Pari Bibi's Tomb: Pari Bibi's Tomb is located inside the fort precinct and marks the burial of a prominent figure associated with the site's 17th-century history.
- Diwan Khana and gateway: Diwan Khana (audience hall) and the gateway form the principal secular buildings of the fort complex and reflect Mughal administrative architecture.
How to Get to Lalbagh Fort #

If arriving by river, the Sadarghat ferry ghats are nearby and the fort is a short walk from the Sadarghat area (a few minutes on foot).
Traffic in Old Dhaka is often slow, so many visitors prefer to use small local vehicles or walk from nearby neighbourhoods; there is no metro/LRT station serving Old Dhaka directly.
Tips for Visiting Lalbagh Fort #
- Aim for early morning to see the fort before Old Dhaka's streets get busy and to avoid the midday heat; mornings also give you more space to photograph the complex without dense crowds.
- Spend time at the on-site archaeological/museum displays and the tomb of Pari Bibi - these interior spaces are easily missed by visitors who only view the exterior courtyards.
- Combine the visit with a short walking circuit through nearby Old Dhaka (Ahsan Manzil and the riverfront at Sadarghat) to spread out crowds and get broader historical context for the fort.
