Lake Turkana
Lake World's largest permanent desert lake in Kenya
A vast, crescent-shaped lake in Kenya’s Rift Valley - the world’s largest permanent desert lake and an alkaline ecosystem; visitors come for remote landscapes, birding, fishing communities and nearby archaeological sites.
Lake Turkana is a large alkaline lake in northern Kenya known as the world’s largest permanent desert lake. The lake and surrounding basin are significant for paleontology and archaeology.
The shoreline and islands offer bird colonies, fish populations adapted to saline conditions, and fossil localities; key field sites and camps lie along its eastern and southern shores. The lake is fed mainly by the Omo River from Ethiopia and supports fishing communities and seasonal wildlife concentrations.
Archaeological work in the basin has produced hominin fossils and stone tool assemblages; discovery and research there intensified in the 20th century and continue to be important for studies of human origins. The lake and several adjacent protected areas are included in a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their natural and cultural values.
Lake Turkana sits in a remote rift basin in northern Kenya, north of the Turkwel and Kerio river valleys and east of the Chalbi Desert. The nearest sizable towns are relatively distant and access is by rough roads and airstrips serving research camps and settlements.
- Hydrology: The lake receives most of its inflow from the Omo River in Ethiopia and is saline to alkaline rather than freshwater.
- Heritage: The surrounding basin contains some of the world's richest paleoanthropological sites and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage designation.
What to See #
- Koobi Fora: A paleoanthropological and fossil-bearing area on the eastern shore containing extensive hominin and faunal remains that have produced key fossils for human evolution.
- Sibiloi National Park: A protected area on the lake's eastern shore noted for shoreline habitats, fossil beds, and archaeological sites associated with the Turkana Basin.
- Central Island: A volcanic island in the lake designated as a national park with bird colonies and shoreline wetlands.
How to Get to Lake Turkana #
Lake Turkana’s main Kenyan gateway town is Lodwar. Lodwar is accessible from Nairobi by scheduled flights and by long-distance road travel along northern Kenya roads; once in Lodwar you travel by local roads to reach different lake shores and camps (distances from Lodwar to lake shore sites vary). If you plan to visit the lake, fly or drive to Lodwar first and then arrange local road transport or guided transfers to the specific lakeside area you intend to visit.
Tips for Visiting Lake Turkana #
- Plan access via Lodwar (the main regional hub) or the lakeshore village of Loiyangalani on the southeastern shore; those towns are the usual bases for Lake Turkana excursions and lodge stays.
- If you're interested in paleontology or archaeology, plan a visit to the Koobi Fora / Sibiloi area with a licensed guide-Koobi Fora is world‑renowned for hominid fossils and requires local permits and guidance.
- Expect long distances and limited services around the lake: arrange transport, accommodation and fuel in advance, and coordinate logistics with a local operator who knows the roads and seasonal access conditions.
Best Time to Visit Lake Turkana #
Best visited in the drier months when access is generally easier; the area is very hot year‑round and remote, so plan logistics carefully.
