Lake Tana

Lake Tana is Ethiopia’s largest lake and the principal source of the Blue Nile, set in the northwestern highlands of the country. The lake features numerous islands and peninsulas that host medieval monasteries and churches.

Many islands and the Zege Peninsula contain monastic complexes with historic churches, manuscripts and religious art dating from the medieval and early modern periods. These sites are accessible by boat and form a major focus for cultural tourism and religious pilgrimage.

Over centuries the lake has served as a centre for monastic life and as the headwaters of the Blue Nile, shaping regional religious and economic patterns. Boat-based transport and small landing sites are the typical means to reach island monasteries.

The lake sits in the Amhara Region of northwestern Ethiopia and drains via the Blue Nile toward the plains to the north and west; the regional city of Bahir Dar lies close to the lake’s southern shore.
